Authorities in the United States are investigating a deadly mass shooting in Austin, Texas, that left three people dead and at least 14 others wounded. Federal investigators say the attack is being treated as a potential act of terrorism.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed it is examining possible extremist motivations behind the attack, which occurred in the city’s downtown entertainment district. Authorities identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally born in Senegal. Investigators say Diagne immigrated to the United States in 2000 and later became a U.S. citizen in 2013.
Images circulating from the scene reportedly show the suspect carrying a rifle and wearing a hoodie with the phrase “Property of Allah.” Authorities also said he had a shirt featuring a design similar to the Iranian flag underneath the hoodie.
Investigators searching the suspect’s home and vehicle reportedly found additional materials, including items linked to Iranian symbolism, as well as a Quran in his car. Officials say these discoveries are among the factors being examined as they attempt to determine the motive behind the attack.
The shooting occurred at a busy bar area and caused panic as people fled the scene while emergency services rushed to assist victims. Several injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.
